How Often Should Your Cabin Air Filter Be Replaced?

The cabin air filter in your vehicle is essentially what keeps the air inside of your vehicle clean. This filter will clean the air that comes into your car through the air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems. It will catch dirt, dust, and pollen before it reaches your interior to keep the air inside clean and allergen-free.

As with any type of filter, the cabin air filter will need to be replaced around every 20,000 km or so, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. For the most accurate recommendation on when the cabin air filter needs to be replaced, refer to your vehicle's owner's manual.

Some climates or driving areas will require a cabin air filter to be replaced more frequently than outlined by the manufacturer, such as dirt road driving or driving is really dusty, dry areas. If your cabin air filter is due for a replacement, you may notice one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Reduced air filter when A/C or heat is turned on
  • Strange noises when A/C or heat is on
  • Persistent bad odors coming through vents, such as a mold or mildew smell

The cabin air filter is typically very insexpensive to replace, so having it checked out at least once a year will be helpful when it comes to maintaining the air quality inside of your car.
