Drive Clean Vehicle Program Cancelled

It has been announced by The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks that the Ontario Drive Clean program has been canceled effective April 1, 2019. This mandatory vehicle emissions testing program will no longer be required after the cancellation date, but vehicle owners will still be required to make sure that their vehicle’s emissions systems are working properly at all times.  Ontario has cited that the reason for the cancellation is to avoid taxpayers costs by up to $40 million a year. Effective April 1, 2019, drivers will no longer be required to have a Drive Clean emissions test performed for their vehicle. If your vehicle is due for a Drive Clean test before the cancellation date, you will still be required to have the test performed on your vehicle before you can renew registration. Until the effective cancellation date, the first Drive Clean emissions test to renew registration for light duty vehicles will be free.  While the Drive Clean program ... read more

Maintenance Service Intervals

Most people in the Oakville area are aware that automotive manufacturers have recommended service intervals. Following recommended service intervals is very important. The engineers that design our vehicles have tested the various systems and components to meet durability and safety standards. Some of these standards are self-imposed and others, like those for emissions components, are government mandated for areas in Ontario. The maintenance schedules are designed to achieve the standards. Think of the benefits of following recommended intervals as falling into three general categories: Protection, Efficiency and Safety.Protection. Let's start with motor oil. First of all, the engineers recommend a particular weight and type of motor oil for your vehicle. All of their oil change recommendations assume using the proper motor oil. Motor oil contains detergents and other additives that clean the engine and prov ... read more

Low Cost of Ownership on Vehicles

Low Cost of Ownership on Vehicles

Preaching About Low Cost of Ownership I’ve heard a lot about “low cost of ownership” lately. Honestly, it sounds like a great deal! In fact, I would like everything I purchase to have low cost of ownership: my car, my house, my dog. But if I don’t invest any money into maintaining my car, my house and (for argument’s sake) my dog, I would have engine failure, broken pipes in my sprinkler system, and my dog could have heartworm, or worse, a litter of puppies! This scenario takes low cost of ownership to the extreme, but isn’t that pretty much what manufacturers are promising when they promote a car that’s low cost to own? Here’s what they’re thinking, “minimal maintenance dollars spent equals customer enjoying a vehicle that costs very little to own.” According to some manufacturers, it could be 16,000 km before you see your customer on the service drive for the first oil change. I’m not saying we shoul ... read more
