How Do I Know If I Need New Tires?

Tires are critical components when it comes to the safety of your vehicle. They are the only thing between your vehicle and the road, and they create the traction necessary for you to accurately control your vehicle. While tires are relatively durable, they still need to be replaced from time to time. With perfect tire maintenance, you may not find yourself needing new tires as often. However, poor vehicle maintenance can lead to needing new tires sooner than expected.

So, how do you know if you need new tires? One thing to keep in mind is that good quality tires usually last around 4 to 5 years, but it depends upon a number of factors. If it's been a while since you replaced your tires, take a look at them. Do they look worn down or frayed? Are they worn unevenly, meaning that some areas are smooth while other areas have tread? Is the tread super low, meaning that your tires feel smooth to the tough? If so, it may be time for new tires!

One test you can rely on is the penny test. Tires can wear unevenly, so you'll want to test the lowest part of the tread on your tire. Take a penny and place it with Lincoln's head facing down. If all of Lincoln's head is visible, it's time to get new tires. Lincoln's head should be covered!

Poor vehicle maintenance can actually lead to needing new tires quicker. For example, misaligned wheels can cause your tires to wear out excessively and quickly. The same goes for bad shocks and struts, and other suspension components. So the better that you maintain your vehicle, the less frequent you'll need a new set of tires.
